River Run Park

Northport, Alabama: Nine Diamonds, One Long Current

The Black Warrior River is in no hurry. At River Run Park, the runner rounding third has other ideas. That’s the pleasure of a ballgame in Northport: the long rhythm of a river town and the sudden urgency of getting home.

Long before teams arrived with matching jerseys and tournament bags, steamboats carried freight between Northport and Mobile. The river connected this little town to a much wider world. Downtown still invites you into that earlier rhythm, with brick streets, old storefronts and a wooden railroad trestle that has become part of the town’s silhouette. Walk around between games and the weekend begins to feel bigger than the schedule. Northport’s history, historic downtown.

Baseball here has a particularly good front-porch story. On the Lary family farm outside Northport, Joseph “Mitt” Lary built a pitching mound in the front yard and coached his sons from the porch. One of those boys, Frank, eventually became Detroit’s “Yankee Killer,” winning 28 games against New York over his major-league career. Before the nickname and the stadium crowds came a father, a yard and brothers who always had another game in them.

Across the river in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama has written its own chapters. In 2012, the Crimson Tide overcame rain delays and a three-run deficit against Oklahoma to become the first SEC team to win a national softball championship. A useful piece of local history to remember when your team is trailing in the fourth.

Today, River Run’s nine turf diamonds welcome the next wave of players. Families settle into covered stands. A warmup throw finds its target. Someone in the dugout starts a cheer that everybody knows by the second inning. Between games, younger siblings have playgrounds to conquer, and downtown’s Kentuck Art Center offers another glimpse of what practiced hands can make.

Get your team here early. There’s a town to wander, a river beside the ballpark and a first pitch that deserves your full attention.
