Kokomo, Indiana: Where Tomorrow’s Names Play Tonight
By the time the lights come on at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, the rest of the evening can wait. A catcher settles behind the plate. Someone opens a scorebook. From the dugout comes that unmistakable mix of nerves and noise: a team ready to find out what kind of night it can make.
Kokomo has been gathering around that possibility for generations. In the early twentieth century, its industrial baseball teams paraded from downtown to Exposition Park, now Foster Park, for opening day. Automobile companies, glass makers and ironworks fielded teams, drawing crowds approaching 3,000. The workweek had its rivalries. Baseball gave them uniforms.
Later, at the city’s earlier ballpark in Highland Park, young players gave those crowds a glimpse of what was coming. Orlando Cepeda played for the Kokomo Giants in 1955. Tommy Davis followed with the Kokomo Dodgers before winning two National League batting titles. Imagine seeing those names on a hometown lineup card while their biggest chapters were still unwritten.
That history keeps getting new names. The Creek Chubs began Prospect League play in 2026, with former major-league pitcher and Kokomo native Joe Thatcher among their owners. A player who grew up here is helping make room for another generation. Even the team’s name belongs to the neighborhood: a small fish found in nearby Wildcat Creek, now enjoying considerably more attention on baseball caps.
Today, Municipal Stadium gives visiting players a chance to step out of the dugout into the full ballpark experience. The turf stretches toward the outfield wall. Families find their seats or a patch of grass on the berm.
Somewhere in the stands, a younger kid might be watching the way you once watched someone else: glove in hand, taking mental notes, already impatient for their turn.
